Response to water deficit of Nothofagus dombeyi plants inoculated with a specific (Descolea antárctica Sing) and non-specific (Pisolithus tinctorious (Pers.) Coker & Couch) ectomycorrhizal fungi RChHN
ALBERDI,MIREN; ÁLVAREZ,MARICEL; VALENZUELA,EDUARDO; GODOY,ROBERTO; OLIVARES,ERICK; BARRIENTOS,MÓNICA.
The influence of the specific Descolea antárctica {Da) and the non-specific Pisolithus tinctorious {Pt) ectomycorrhizal fungi on some physiological leaf parameters of the Chilean evergreen Nothofagus dombeyi subjected to a low soil water potential (-1.6 to -1.9 MPa in a growth chamber for 35 days) and a high water potential (-0.07 to -0.09 MPa, control) was studied. Drought decreased the water status and increased carbohydrates in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants, appearing Z)a-mycorrhizal and non mycorrhizal plants better osmotically adjusted (OA= 0.60 MPa and 0.52 MPa, respectively) than ft-mycorrhizal (0.39 MPa). Proline is not involved in the O A of mycorrhizal plants. The inoculation of N. dombeyi with both ectomycorrhizal fungi favored a better...

Hydrogen sulfide, potassium phosphite and zinc sulfate as alleviators of drought stress in sunflower plants Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Almeida,Gabriel Martins; Silva,Adinan Alves da; Batista,Priscila Ferreira; Moura,Luciana Minervina de Freitas; Vital,Roberto Gomes; Costa,Alan Carlos.
ABSTRACT Drought is the most harmful environmental factor crop productivity. Some chemicals are used in agriculture to mitigate the damage from this stress on plants. Therefore, we examined whether the spraying of zinc sulfate (ZS), potassium phosphite (KPhi) and the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) would mitigate the deleterious effects of water deficit on sunflower plants by analyzing physiological and biometric characteristics. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse using a randomized block design with five replications. The treatments were arranged in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme: [Factor A (Alleviators)] - spraying of KPhi (0.5 L ha-1), ZS (3.2 kg ha-1), NaHS (1.2 g ha-1), and water; [Factor B (substrate humidity, SH)] -...

Almeida,João Paulo Nobre de; Paiva,Emanoela Pereira de; Torres,Salvador Barros; Sá,Francisco Vanies da Silva; Leite,Moadir de Sousa.
ABSTRACT Information on the effects of climate conditions on the survival of species grown in semi-arid regions is essential and at the same time scarce, especially regarding rustic species such as West Indian gherkin (Cucumis anguria L.). Thus, this study aimed to evaluate germination, growth and biochemical alterations in C. anguria seeds under water stress and different temperature regimes. The experimental design was completely randomized, in 5 x 5 factorial scheme, composed of five osmotic potentials (0.0; -0.1; -0.2; -0.3 and -0.4 MPa) and four temperatures (20; 25; 30 °C and alternating temperatures of 20-30 ºC), with each treatment composed of four replicates of 50 seeds. The seeds were sown on paper towel (Germitest®) and germinated in Biochemical...

NONLINEAR AGROMETEOROLOGICAL MODELS FOR ESTIMATING LYCHEE FRUIT GROWTH Rev. Bras. Frutic.
APARECIDO,LUCAS EDUARDO DE OLIVEIRA; FERREIRA,RAFAEL BIBIANO; ROLIM,GLAUCO DE SOUZA; SOUZA,BIANCA SARZI DE; SOUZA,PAULO SERGIO DE.
ABSTRACT The influence of climate on the development of lychee fruit is complex, but few studies have discussed the problem. We developed agrometeorological models for simulating the development of fruit fresh matter (FM), fruit dry matter (DM), fruit length (LE), fruit diameter (DI), fruit volume (VO), and fruit number per cluster (FN) of the “Bengal” lychee cultivar as functions of climatic conditions. We conducted three analyses: (a) the influence of mean meteorological elements on the rates of fruit growth, (b) estimation of fruit development by the agrometeorological models using sigmoidal adjustments, and (c) simulation of fruit development using multiple nonlinear regression of two meteorological elements to improve the accuracy. A rate of water...

Araujo,Leandro Coelho de; Santos,Patricia Menezes; Rodriguez,Daniel; Pezzopane,José Ricardo Macedo.
ABSTRACT: Climate, soil and management are the main drives for growth and production of tropical pastures. Thus, a better understanding of the effects of these factors and their interactions under climate conditions is required to obtain effective management options. Here, we used data from two field trials to research on climate and management interactions on the production seasonality of Panicum maximum Jacq. Treatments included four sampling times (250, 500, 750, and 1000 °C accumulated) during eight regrowth period, under irrigated and rainfed conditions and, cuts were made to simulate grazing intensity. All treatments were arranged in a completely randomized block design with four replications. At each sampling time, basal tillers were sampled to...

Intercepted solar radiation by maize crops subjected to different tillage systems and water availability levels PAB
Bergamaschi,Homero; Dalmago,Genei Antonio; Bergonci,João Ito; Krüger,Cleusa Adriane Menegassi Bianchi; Heckler,Bruna Maria Machado; Comiran,Flavia.
The objective of this work was to evaluate changes in the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) interception efficiency and PPFD extinction coefficient for maize crop subjected to different soil tillage systems and water availability levels. Crops were subjected to no-tillage and conventional tillage systems combined with full irrigation and non-irrigation treatments. Continuous measurements of transmitted PPFD on the soil surface and incoming PPFD over the canopy were taken throughout the crop cycle. Leaf area index and soil water potential were also measured during the whole period. Considering a mean value over the maize cycle, intercepted PPFD was higher in the conventional tillage than in the no-tillage system. During the initial stages of plants,...

Bergamaschi,Homero; Wheeler,Timothy Robert; Challinor,Andrew Juan; Comiran,Flávia; Heckler,Bruna Maria Machado.
This study aimed to establish relationships between maize yield and rainfall on different temporal and spatial scales, in order to provide a basis for crop monitoring and modelling. A 16-year series of maize yield and daily rainfall from 11 municipalities and micro-regions of Rio Grande do Sul State was used. Correlation and regression analyses were used to determine associations between crop yield and rainfall for the entire crop cycle, from tasseling to 30 days after, and from 5 days before tasseling to 40 days after. Close relationships between maize yield and rainfall were found, particularly during the reproductive period (45-day period comprising the flowering and grain filling). Relationships were closer on a regional scale than at smaller scales....

Water deficit modifies the carbon isotopic composition of lipids, soluble sugars and leaves of Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (Fabaceae) Acta Botanica
Bertholdi,Angelo Albano da Silva; Costa,Vladimir Eliodoro; Rodrigues,Angélica Lino; Almeida,Luiz Fernando Rolim de.
ABSTRACT Water deficit is most frequent in forest physiognomies subjected to climate change. As a consequence, several tree species alter tissue water potential, gas exchange and production of carbon compounds to overcome damage caused by water deficiency. The working hypothesis, that a reduction in gas exchange by plants experiencing water deficit will affect the composition of carbon compounds in soluble sugars, lipids and vegetative structures, was tested on Copaifera langsdorffii. Stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, and CO2 assimilation rate declined after a period of water deficit. After rehydration, leaf water potential and leaf gas exchange did not recover completely. Water deficit resulted in 13C enrichment in leaves, soluble sugars and...

Physiology of cashew plants grown under adverse conditions Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Bezerra,Marlos A.; Lacerda,Claudivan F. de; Gomes Filho,Enéas; Abreu,Carlos E. B. de; Prisco,José T..
The cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is an important crop for semi-arid agriculture and contributes to the social and economical development of several world regions, including the northeast of Brazil. In spite of its importance, very few studies aim to understand the effects of abiotic stresses on the development and yield of the cashew. This review covers the research on cashew ecophysiology, with emphasis on the effects of water and salt stress on its development, mineral nutrition and gas exchange processes. The results presented here were obtained at different plant growth stages and under different environmental conditions of soil and climate. The ecophysiological significance of this information is also discussed.

Abstract The common bean is characterized by high sensitivity to drought and low productivity. Breeding for drought resistance in this species involves genes of different genetic groups. In this work, we used a SEA 5 x AND 277 cross to map quantitative trait loci associated with drought tolerance in order to assess the factors that determine the magnitude of drought response in common beans. A total of 438 polymorphic markers were used to genotype the F8 mapping population. Phenotyping was done in two greenhouses, one used to simulate drought and the other to simulate irrigated conditions. Fourteen traits associated with drought tolerance were measured to identify the quantitative trait loci (QTLs). The map was constructed with 331 markers that covered all...

Comparison between climatological and field water balances for a coffee crop Scientia Agricola
Bruno,Isabeli Pereira; Silva,Adriana Lúcia da; Reichardt,Klaus; Dourado-Neto,Durval; Bacchi,Osny Oliveira Santos; Volpe,Clóvis Alberto.
The use of climatological water balances in substitution to complete water balances directly measured in the field allows a more practical crop management, since the climatological water balances are based on data monitored as a routine. This study makes a comparison between these methods in terms of estimatives of evapotranspiration, soil water storage, soil available water, runoff losses, and drainage below root zone, during a two year period, taking as an example a coffee crop of the variety Catuaí, three to five years old. Climatological water balances based on the estimation of the evapotranspiration through the methods of Thornthwaite and Penman-Monteith, can reasonably substitute field measured balances, however underestimating the above mentioned...

Effects of water deficit on gas exchange of different age leaves and both stem and leaves solute content of sunflowers Agrociencia
Canavar,Öner.
Water deficit alters biochemical and physiological processes ranging from photosynthesis to protein synthesis and solute accumulation in the different organs of the plant. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of water deficit on photosynthetic responses of leaves at different ages and the accumulation of soluble sugar and starch in the stems and leaves of sunflowers (Helianthus annuus L.). Two sunflower cultivars (Sanbro and TR-3080) were used under two water regimes, well watered (70 % irrigation) and water deficit (20 % irrigation) according to the field capacity of soil under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was randomized complete block with five replicates. The transpiration rate (E), the ratio of intercellular air...

Climatic effects on sugarcane ripening under the influence of cultivars and crop age Scientia Agricola
Cardozo,Nilceu Piffer; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
The lack of information about the effects of cultivars, crop age and climate on the sugarcane (Saccharum ssp.) crop yield and quality has been the primary factor impacting the sugar-ethanol sector in Brazil. One of the processes about which we do not have a satisfactory understanding is sugarcane ripening and the effects of cultivars, crop age and climate on that. Sugarcane ripening is the process of sucrose accumulation in stalks, which is heavily influenced by several factors, mainly by climatic conditions such as air temperature and water deficits. Because it is a complex process, studies of the variables involved in sugarcane ripening can provide important information, resulting in a better use of commercial cultivars, bringing advantages to growers,...
